These days, there has been leaked information that farmers in China use various chemicals to make their watermelons bigger. Unfortunately, they aren’t aware that they are destroying them. The fields are full of fruit that is huge.
One of the chemicals used to accelerate growth is called forchlorfenuron. The melons that went over this method have fruit with awkward shapes that are fibrous and with white and not black seeds. This fruit couldn’t be eaten so farmers gave it to their pigs and fish.
What does Forchlorfenuron represent?
This matter is claimed to be a regulator plant growth regulator. It was registered with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2004 and it was supposed to be used on raisins, grapes and kiwis. The matter was supposed to improve the cluster weight, fruit size, cold storage and fruit set. Unfortunately, this chemical only made the fruits explode.
It isn’t recommended for eating as it may cause various health problems.
Are Growth Promoting Chemicals Safe to Eat?
The chemical is legal in the US and China, but they claim it’s not harmless. There have been some studies that were performed on animals and they showed: increased pup mortality, increased hair loss, decreased litter sizes and decreased birth weight.
It was also proved to be moderately toxic to freshwater fish.
How You can Notice Which Fruit Is Grown with Growth Accelerating
Fruits that aren’t grown naturally usually lack flavor. They look like they’re ripe, but the flavor isn’t there. The fruit only grows with this chemicals, but loses its flavor and benefits. Flavor comes in time, when a fruit or vegetable is ripe.
Watermelons that are treated with forchlorfenuron are huge in size and bright in color, but their flesh inside is more white. Their shape is often different. Their seeds are white.
Hormones in Your Fruits and Veggies? You Bet!
We’ve all heard that according to many researches meat is usually pumped with hormones, but they can also be added on fruits and vegetables.
Some of the most present hormones include oxytocin which is actually a neuromodulator in your brain. Some countries have used it illegally and inject it into their fruits and vegetables.
The hormone is particularly being used on watermelons, aubergines, pumpkins and cucumbers.
Some of the side-effects the food caused were: neurotic complications, nausea, vomiting, irregular heartbeat, cramping, sterility, stomach pain and nervous breakdowns.
Other Growth Promoters Used on Produce
There are also other agents that are used to promote growth like calcium carbide usually used on papayas, apples and guavas and ethylene, mostly used on mangoes.
Ethylene is mostly thought to be safe but calcium carbide was proved to have some traces of phosphorus and arsenic that are toxic. StiWhile ethylene is considered GRAS (generally recognized as safe), calcium carbide “may contain traces of arsenic and phosphorus, both highly toxic to humans,” according to one industry source, and most countries do not allow its use.
Interestingly enough, one of the Chinese farll, it isn’t very clear whether the toxic matters used on the watermelons in China included this particular toxin.
Still on the Fence about Going Organic?
Organic food is the best thing you can intake. These products aren’t full of pesticides and toxic matters and they also contain more nutrients, minerals and antioxidants. They’re also better in flavor than any other product. Make sure you find fresh and organic products which are confirmed to be fresh and safe. You better spend more money on organic products and be healthy than eating products full of harmful matters.
