Rice is the seed of the grass specie Oryza sativa or also oryzaglaberrima and is mostly eaten in Asia and elsewhere too. It is white or brown and do you know other differences?
Brown vs. white rice
The common false thinking is that brown is much healthier than white rice but here are the pros and cons for both types.
White rice and blood glucose
We all avoid white rice since the GI is telling us it raises blood sugar. But this goes for rice, not its color per se. basmati rice has low GI and brown basmati raises glucose more than white. The study that proved this had 14 people tested and they ate 11 types of rice also brown and basmati too. Experts measured the glucose of the people and the brown basmati is medium GI but white basmati had lower GI. This means the color means nothing for the glucose.
Phytates and brown rice
There are lots of reasons to see that white is better than brown rice. Brown one has more phytates and these are acids or anti-nutrients, they block good minerals like zinc, iron, calcium. Phytate foods make mineral deficits and harm the health.
So, do not skip white rice all the time, both colors are good, but white is not as bad as we think.
