Numerous researches have been performed and they can all confirm that there is food that is contaminated by various harmful chemicals that come from some types of plastic. Many foods are nowadays packaged in plastics: fresh meat, gourmet cheese and even some organic vegetables and healthy foods.
Plastic isn’t the real problem. The problem is in the polymer molecules it contains which can transfer themselves from the packaging in the food. Plastic is also full some very small molecules that move into the food and stay inside.
Sandwich plastic bags as well as plastic wrap are for a single use. Various types of plastics contain a chemical called BPA that transfers itself into food and if we eat it often, it can cause various health problems.
According to various studies, heat is the one that causes the chemicals in plastic bottles and storage boxes to leach into our food and beverages. It increases the risk of infertility, fetal growth restriction etc.
What Do Code Numbers or Recycling Symbols Found on Plastics Mean?
The most widely used type of plastic is PETE or PET. Numerous beverages and foods are packed in it. This one is considered to be a type of plastic that’s safe and doesn’t leach toxins. But, according to some studies, it can actually be found that it releases the toxic mineral called antimony when it’s heated.
Another type of plastic that’s used is HDPE. It’s used to create milk and water jugs, dairy product tubs, plastic bags, etc. It’s also considered to be non-toxic and safe.
V or PVC is used to create plastic wrap, in many store-bought varieties that are used to package deli and that kind of products. It is full of phthalates. These are chemical compounds used to maintain its pliability. They can leach out of PVC products easily. PVC can also release a material called di-(2-ethylhexyl) adipate especially when it comes into contact with fatty foods. Experts recommend that this type of plastic should be avoided.
A type of plastic that’s used in the creation of bread bags, frozen food and squeezable bottles is LDPE. It is thought to be a non-leaching plastic type.
PP is used to create food tubs and bottles, but also in reusable containers. It is also considered to be a non-leaching type of plastic.
PS is used in foamed food containers. It can leach various chemicals in food, so make sure you avoid to use it in your kitchen.
Another type of plastic that includes everything else is OTHER. Like, for example, polycarbonate is a common material that is shatter-resistant. Manufacturers use it to produce baby bottles as well as reusable water bottles. Polycarbonates can actually leach a toxin called BPA into beverages and foods. Are new PLA plastics based on corn that are considered to be safe and have this symbol on them.
Researchers claim that BPA, phthalates, as well as some of the other endocrine disruptors are connected to hormonal imbalance, an increased risk of cancer, as well as numerous other health problems.
The FDA has recently banned 6 phthalates to be used in children’s products. They are now performing tests on why they should be banned from the lining of food cans and beverage as well as baby bottles.
Plastic wrap doesn’t contain BPA or phthalates, but according to some tests performed in 2008 there are very small levels of them in the Glad brand “Press n’Seal” wrap.
There is polyvinyl chloride or PVC in the common U.S. plastic wrap as well as a plasticizer called DEHA. According to some studies, DEHA can cause the appearance of liver tumors in mice. All of the studies have proved that this ingredient can transfer itself into food, especially if it’s present in high fat foods like cheese.
Still, the FDA doesn’t have a limit that will regulate the safe amount of DEHA which is used in our food because there is still no scientific evidence about the health effects it has on humans. The government still hasn’t ruled it out as a chemical that promotes cancer.
