According to recent researches, there is a connection between sugar and cancer.
Numerous experts have already disputed that cancer cells thrive on sugar, but now they finally have a proof.
A study which was performed for 9 years has found a connection which causes cancer cells to metabolize sugar.
The idea was formerly based on the fact that cancer cells are living and they actually need to feed on something so that they could grow and develop.
When cancer cells are left without oxygen, they starve. It is the contrary when they have plenty of sugar around them: they grow stronger and develop more and more.
This new discovery enables doctors to turn off the supply of sugar which goes to the cancer cells and it doesn’t let it go to the other healthy cells.
According to Johan Thevelein, a researcher from KU Leuven, when we consume plenty of sugar, it creates a dangerous cycle in which cancerous cells feed on it constantly, but also grow and develop more and more. The tumor becomes more aggressive. Still, more research needs to be done in order to provide more information.
The Warburg effect is also connected to this. During this process, the cancer cells produce glycolysis so that they can maintain themselves alive.
The study included yeast which possesses similar properties. Still, it isn’t like sugar, since it doesn’t make the cancer cells grow easily.
