Making your own fabric softener is a great way to preserve your health and the health of your loved ones and is easier than you may think. Homemade fabric softeners can be prepared with natural ingredients that won’t affect your skin and won’t harm your health in any way. A nice DIY fabric softener can eliminate any odors, clean stubborn stains and is far cheaper than commercial fabric softeners.
Today we’re going to show you how to prepare a homemade fabric softener with Epsom salts, essential oils and baking soda. You’ll also need a container with a lid that will keep the softener fresh.
Mix 2 cups of Epsom salt (or sea salt) and 20-30 drops of your favorite essential oils in the container, then add the baking soda and mix again well. Baking soda is great against stubborn stains, while the essential oils give the softener a nice smell which will keep your clothes fresh for a long time. Use 2-3 tablespoons of the DIY softener in the washing machine and your clothes will smell better than ever!
This homemade fabric softener is completely harmless and very effective. Commercial products may sound amazing, but they are full of toxic chemicals which can significantly damage your health. Some of the most popular brands contain benzyl acetate, a compound which has been linked to pancreatic and other types of cancer. These products are even worse for the environment due to the presence of several petroleum-based compounds that are not biodegradable. Finally, commercial fabric softeners are rich in benzyl alcohol for which studies have shown that it harms the upper respiratory tract.
In order to avoid potential health problems and preserve the environment, we suggest preparing the aforementioned fabric softener. It’s cheap and easy to prepare, and works just as well, if not better than most commercial products.
