Many people of USA do not know the importance of magnesium. Due to this, over 80% people in USA have this deficit.
The side effects of this are serious and can be worsened with other meds.
Dr. Carolyn Dean is medicine and naturopathy doctor. In 2003 she wrote the Death by Medicine where she said modern medicines are lead causes of death in USA.
Dean has studied magnesium over 15 years and in 2003, she published the book Magnesium Miracle and now she works on a 3rd edition.
She wants to tell how important this mineral is, how to get it and how much you need, it is amazing.
This is one of the best minerals
The most important of all minerals since it has many functions:
- Digesting carbs and proteins and fats
- A building block for RNA and DNA synthesis too
- Makes energy and activates adenosine triphosphate ATP
- Activation of nerves and muscles
As we said, not many know that they lack mg in their diets. At this time, also we have excess calcium. This imbalance is harmful. Too much calcium and lack Mg makes flexed muscles, spasms and harmed heart too.
The muscles and nerves are diminished with no magnesium. Calcium makes contractions in muscles and with a balance here, muscles would be healthy, relaxed.
Dean also said those with imbalance of calcium and Mg have more risk of cardiac arrest. The heart has the most magnesium in all human organs. So lack of Mg damages the heart.
More attention to calcium and magnesium ratios
In these last decades, most health experts urge women to have calcium pills and avoid osteoporosis this way. Also lots of foods have extra calcium to prevent deficit and sadly, this is not good for osteoporosis prevention.
I know about stats that 700% rise is shown of osteoporosis during a decade, even with calcium, said Dean.
This myth that we need double calcium to have good bones is false. Thus most pills supplements have 1200-1500 mg calcium and just a few hundred mg of Mg.
Dean also adds that this ratio 2:1 is made by mistake by the French expert Jean Durlach who propagated 2 parts calcium and 1 part Mg of food, water or pills. Also a better ratio would be here 1:1.
Vitamin K2 and D ratios are vital too
Also know that calcium and Mg have to be in synch with K2 and D. blogs by dean said about this a lot. She said high dose of D overworks Mg and makes Mg deficit.
Lack of synch between Mg, D, calcium, K2 is the cause of calcium supplements being harmful for attack and stroke and even D toxicity. Partially this is because K2 can keep calcium in its place. If you have deficit in K2, calcium can worsen things.
If you take vitamin D pills, also you need Mg and K2 too. If you lack these, you will get the D toxicity and Mg deficit too, along calcification.
Diet sources of Mg and calcium
Seeds, nuts, green leafy veggies, dairy, bone broth and more.
Mg is scarce a lot in foods lately.
Mg is farmed OFF the soil and calcium not so much said Dean. A century ago, we could get 500 mg of Mg from a plain diet. Now even 200 mg would be amazing so we are in need of supplements.
Sadly, agriculture depleted soil of minerals and if you can get organic foods, this is fine. the chlorophyll has Mg atom in the middle and lets the plant get sun energy.
Leafy greens, seaweed, Swiss chard, spinach, nuts, beans, seeds, pumpkin, sunflower, sesame are the best Mg sources.
Also juice the veggies.
Most foods today lack Mg and minerals. Herbicides, glyphosate all block the minerals. Due to that, people lack Mg and take supplements.
Mg deficit signs
Sadly, there is no easy lab test to say how Mg is used in the body.
As you know, 1% of Mg inside is in blood. So a blood sample is not accurate.
The early signs are weakness, nausea, fatigue, headache, appetite loss, and serious signs like:
- Abnormal heart pulse
- Personality changes
- Coronary spasms
- Cramps in muscles
- Tingling and numbness
Which mg is the best?
Dean said is best to increase Mg with supplements. Many forms are found on the market. The cheapest is mg oxide and they get 4% absorbed inside. The rest 96% is in intestines and could make laxative effect for constipation.
Another way to get more Mg is Epsom baths. Epsom is magnesium sulfate absorbed in the skin. Also get Mg oil.
There are Mg supplements of other sources too, except pico-ionic Mg, no other pure Mg exists. The items used in supplements affect the work of Mg and make different benefits.
- Mg glycinate- chelated of Mg with most absorbing. Ideal for anyone with Mg deficit.
- Mg chloride and Mg lactate-they have 12% Mg and good absorbing, more than Mg oxide with 5 times more Mg
- Mg sulfate and Mg hydroxide – milk magnesia. This is used as laxative and you can overdose on these so careful
- Mg carbonate- has 45% Mg and is antacid.
- Mg taurate- has mix of Mg and taurine amino acid. They make soothing calm effect on mind and body
- Mg oxide- non-chelated Mg binds to organic and fat acids. It has 60% Mg and softens the stool
- Mg citrate- Mg with citric acid also a laxative
- Mg threonate- new type of Mg that goes deep in mitochondrial membranes
Prescribed drugs also deplete Mg in the body
As per Dean, stress and such drugs are major factors in deficit of Mg. conventional medicine leads to worse things and Dean said this is basic. It can be recognized easily, especially under stress. Stress is loss of Mg. Mg is burned and this is because it helps the adrenal glands. It tries to keep you far from depression and relax the muscles.
When tight or stressed, Mg is lost and vessels tighten up. This makes hypertension and you will need a diuretic.
This drops the fuel inside and removes pressure off vessels. Also these diuretics drain MG too. Month later, pressure is still up. Then the doctor gives you calcium channel blockers, not knowing that Mg is a natural such blocker.
Also the doctor will give you angiotensin converting enzyme or ACE inhibitor for the pressure. After a few months, you will see a damaged liver.
Then elevated cholesterol and even sugar.
Doctors are not much helpful here. They just saw the sugar change, but they also CAUSED this.
Dean also added that the more Mg you lack, the more cholesterol problems you will have. Mg balances enzymes that make cholesterol normal. Also statins kill the enzyme for balance in Mg. Mg deficit is common in diabetes so drugs can increase more diabetes risks with stealing Mg.
Fluoride drains you off Mg
Dean is worried about fluoride added in all drugs. The antibiotics with fluoroquinolone, Cipro for example, have excess fluoride. Also other drugs have this, like those for anxiety, cholesterol, painkillers. Mg binds to fluoride and makes Mg fluoride, which steals Mg of the body.
Lots of drugs cause inflammation. Dean said calcium makes inflammations and Mg removes inflammations. So you need good ratio of these minerals and know that excess calcium makes risk of heart issues.
For now there are 3 studies in British medical journal. A facility of New Zealand showed women who take calcium have more heart risks. Doctors still say calcium can be stopped, but Mg is not mentioned.
