Recently, a new study on magic mushrooms managed to prove that they could be used as a very effective treatment by people who are fighting depression. The research was initiated by Imperial College London. The patients who took psilocybin, which is a psychoactive compound that can be naturally found in magic mushrooms, managed to have decreased symptoms several weeks after the treatment.
Patients who had treatment-resistant depression had 2 doses of psilocybin, first 10 mg, then 25 mg, one-week apart. The researchers monitored the changes in the brain for the whole time. The treatment managed to give very fast and good effects.
Also, the blood flow was decreased on the areas which were responsible for fear and stress. The study was small and only included 19 people. All of the patients first failed to respond to any conventional treatments. Even the patients themselves have felt great results after they were given the ingredient from the magical mushroom e.g. psilocybin. The effects have been described as similar to the electroconvulsive therapy.
Some other additional trials have also shown long-term changes in the attitudes, behaviors and values of the patients who were treated with this ingredient. All of the changes were significant.
