Head lice are parasites which live on our head and feed of dead skin cells and nutrients from the scalp. Although not a life-threatening condition, head lice are gross and pretty difficult to get rid of, especially if you don’t stop their spread in the beginning. They can cause itching and sores on the scalp, which can get infected if left untreated. And, although there are many store-bought shampoos and products that promise swift lice removal, there are far better and safer ways to get rid of the pests.
Here are 5 natural remedies for removing head lice:
Neem oil shampoo
Add 10 drops of neem oil in 30 ml. of shampoo, then massage the mixture on your scalp and cover your head with a shower cap and towel and leave the mixture to work for half an hour. Wash your hair as usual in the end, and repeat the process every day until the lice are no longer present.
Mix a bit of water and apple cider vinegar, then pour the mixture all over your scalp and leave it to kill the lice for 20-25 minutes. Repeat the process every couple of days in order to eliminate the lice and their eggs as well.
Here’s how to use coconut oil to eliminate head lice:
- Apple cider vinegar
- Coconut oil
- Shower cap
Rinse your hair with ACV first, then apply the coconut oil on your scalp and massage it in nicely. Put the shower cap on your head and leave the oil to suffocate the lice for 6 hours, and repeat the procedure every day for a week.
Here’s how to use garlic to kill the lice:
- 3 teaspoons lime juice
- 10 garlic cloves
- Shower cap
Grind the garlic cloves to paste first, then add the lime juice and mix well. Apply the mixture on your head and rub it in your scalp, then leave it on your head for 30 minutes before rinsing with water. In order to get rid of all the lice, use the process every day for 2 weeks.
Tea tree oil
You can mix some tea tree oil with olive oil and a bit of your shampoo in order to kill the lice. Use a teaspoon of tea tree oil, 3 tablespoons of olive oil and 1 oz. of shampoo to prepare the mixture, then rub it in your scalp and put a shower cap on your head. Leave the mixture to work for half an hour, then rinse your hair with hot water. Repeat the process ever day and the lice should be gone in just a short time.
