Healthy teeth are very important for our oral health as well as for our complete health. We know how important it is to brush our teeth in the morning as well as before sleeping. If we don’t do that, we can obtain a gum disease, a sore mouth, bad breath etc. A recent study performed in Finland claims that all of these health problems are somehow connected to cancer.
A certain bacteria called Treponema denticola is the one that causes these oral problems. It’s a very bad bacteria which can cause numerous oral problems.
The study discusses that the bacteria has a mutual enzyme that it shares with several kinds of gastrointestinal cancer. The enzyme is called Td-CTLP. It can also activate other different enzymes. Cancer cells use it to spread through the body.
Gum disease has an effect on the immune system
This enzyme also causes difficulties for the immune system to respond in a fast way. The bacteria that cause this gum disease actually help the cancer to spread. It can also contribute to the appearance of orodigestive carcinogenesis.
Matching theory with reality
The researchers decided to see with another research if this theory can be connected to reality. They analyzed over 68,273 adults throughout a period of 10 years.
They managed to discover a clear connection in a patient who had a diagnosed gum disease and his death caused by cancer. It was an especially strong link with pancreatic cancer.
The research took everything in consideration. They only saw that they couldn’t control smoking and alcohol consumption. They discovered an increased rate of mortality in people with pancreatic cancer and a link between this type of cancer and periodontitis.
Brush your teeth!
Still, there are many things that are unclear, but the research emphasizes the great importance of good oral hygiene. Almost half of all people in America over 30 have a form of gum disease, whether it is only an inflammation or it’s so severe that it leads to losing their teeth.
Gum disease appears like usually gingivitis that we all know is very common. Your gums start to bleed even during brushing your teeth. When your breath also becomes bad, it’s a serious sign that the gingivitis has become periodontitis e.g. the disease has spread into the bone from the seemingly superficial gums. The teeth become very sensitive and they start to loosen up, so the gums look like they’ve shrink because they are very sore. It’s very easy to avoid gum. You just need to brush your teeth very often!
