Our entire life we’ve believed that cotton swabs are the best way to clean our ears, but according to recent studies this method of removing earwax can actually damage our eardrum by making small cuts in the channels, piercing them or dislocating our internal bones.
The wax that’s produced and accumulated in our ears serves to lubricate our auditory channel, protect our ears and prevent bacteria from entering the inner ear. In addition to ear wax, in our ear channel we get accumulation of excess fat and dead skin cells which should be cleaned out regularly in order to prevent canal obstructions and hearing loss.
But it’s also important to perform this ear cleaning safely, with the help of some natural ingredients which will not cause damage to our eardrum or auditory channels. What are the safe ear cleaning methods you ask?
Here’s a list of a couple of natural and safe remedies which will help you clean the wax from your ears without causing damage:
Hydrogen peroxide may be the best ingredient you can use for earwax cleaning as its composition makes it possible to reduce the bacterial presence without damaging the inner area.
Combine hydrogen peroxide and water in equal amounts and you can start applying this mixture. Tilt your head to one side and add 2-3 drops of the mixture with a dropper inside your ear. Stay with your tilted head for 3 minutes and tilt your head in the opposite direction to get the debris out of your ear. Repeat with the other ear and perform this cleaning technique every 2 weeks.
Glycerin is one of the most common recipes for auditory channels cleaning as the liquid softens the walls’ gelatinous substance and prevents bacterial infections.
Just as with hydrogen peroxide, tilt your head on one side and add 2-3 drops of gelatin in your ear and stay in that position for 3 minutes. Clean the remaining debris and repeat the same with the other ear. This should be done every week.
Coconut oil is an excellent ingredient which will open your auditory channels and prevent external agents accumulation in the area.
Before use you should heat up the coconut oil so that it turns to liquid form. Now you can apply a couple of drops in each ear and leave it in for 3-5 minutes until the debris loosens up. Then you can tilt your head to clean the liquid. This method can be performed once every two weeks.
Apple cider vinegar
ACV can regulate your pH value in the auditory channels and help clean the ear wax quite efficiently. It will also prevent bacterial infections and reduce ear inflammation.
Mix a bit of ACV with some warm water and apply the a few drops of the mixture to each of your ears. Remember to tilt your head and let it do its magic for 3 minutes. Clean the waste and repeat with the other ear. This procedure can be done once a month.
Almond oil is abundant in vitamin E which makes it an excellent remedy for lubrication and ear wax softening. It can also prevent itching and irritation.
The procedure is similar to the one with coconut oil, warm the almond oil to soften up and apply a few drops in each ear and leave it in for 3 minutes. Tilt the head and clean out the remaining debris. Perfrom this cleaning once every two weeks.
Finally, we must mention olive oil as one of the best oils for cleaning your auditory channels without causing any damage. Olive oil is also rich in vitamin E but in fatty acids as well, which will protect your ears from infections.
