Recently, a study appeared showing the effects that foods like French fries have on people. More than 4,400 people were included from 45 to 79 years of age.
They often consumed hash browns, potato chips as well as French fries more than 2 times a week throughout a period of 8 years.
The research discovered that these people had an increased risk to die younger! The results were compared to people who didn’t consume this type of products at all.
Other Essential Factors
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition also published a study about the same problematics. They didn’t found evidence about the connection between the consumption of fried potatoes and early death.
But, a researcher from Padova, Italy called Nicola Veronese, now claims to have found the most important factor.
The oil in which the potatoes are being cooked is essential since it’s abundant in trans-fats!
These are very bad fats which increase the level of LDL or otherwise known as bad cholesterol in our body. This leads to heart diseases later in life.
This researcher hopes that his study will warn people that they shouldn’t intake fried potatoes every day. Also, it’s very important how much of them you intake e.g. how big the portion is. If you eat a bigger portion, then it’s crucial to decrease it so that you can protect your own health.
Nicola Veronese also claims that there are numerous other factors which can increase the risk of early death in people who consume fried foods very often.
Some of the most crucial are: obesity, inactivity and high intake of salt.
What is Acrylamide? How Can We Avoid It?
Susanna Larsson, who is an associate professor at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, claims that no evidence can be found that consuming potatoes can truly increase that risk.
This professor isn’t included in the study. Yet, she has had her own study about the consumption of potatoes. She claims that the consumption of potatoes as well as the increased risk of acquiring any heart disease aren’t related at all.
But, a dietitian from Northwell Health’s Huntington Hospital in New York, called Stephanie Schiff, claims that fried potatoes as well as starchy foods bring a great risk if you consume them very often.
They are abundant in a chemical which causes cancer and its name is acrylamide.
This chemical becomes produced when some foods like the above mentioned are heated at high temperatures. We usually roast, bake or fry these foods.
Protect yourself as well as your own health by boiling or steaming foods that are starchy!
