Recently, the FDA approved the first sale of GMO salmon and deemed the meat fit for consumption. The decision caused an outrage all over the country as GMO foods have always been considered risky and dangerous for our health. The GMO salmon grows twice as fast as wild salmon and is designed by AquaBounty Technologies. Due to the lack of studies on the fish, it’s safe to assume that it is a health hazard indeed.
The review process by the FDA lacked any conclusive evidence that would clarify if the meat is safe for consumption. The two studies that were submitted were conducted by the producer (AquaBounty), but they were not exactly conclusive, and shown an increase of hormones and allergens after the consumption of the fish. The GMO salmon will be produced in Panama and exported to the USA and Europe afterwards.
The fish is made by injecting growth hormones in fertilized eggs in order for it to grow 4 times faster and larger. According to a research conducted by Purdue University, GMO salmon might have negative impact on other fish if released in the wild. And this isn’t even the worst part – GMO fish will not be labeled, which is highly unethical. This is a big win for GMO foods, but a painful loss for the consumer.
As the FDA approved the sale of this fish, the wild and dangerous experiment will soon arrive on our plates, and only time will tell if the GMO salmon is dangerous for our health.
