We’ve all noticed that the salmon we buy in stores or supermarkets is of different color, sometimes dull pink and sometimes red. That’s why many people want to have wild salmon and not the farmed type.
The bright red color usually signifies that the salmon is very healthy and it’s fresh. It’s considered to be better than the pink one, but people don’t know that the red color is obtained with the use of artificial colors. That’s why you have to pay a lot of attention when you want to buy salmon. Make sure you discover where it came from and whether it was harvested.
WHY IS THE SALMON RED?
Astaxanthin is an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory compound that fungi, seafood, microalgae and complex plants contain. The red color of the salmon is from the bright red carotenoids that are plant pigments. Salmon helps us increase our strength endurance by 50 %, it improves our blood flow, protects our mitochondria and improves the production of mitochondrial energy.
Farmed salmon and wild salmon are different because the wild salmon feeds on plankton which is rich in astaxanthin. This is luxury food for farmers and they can’t afford it, so most of them use pellets which contain a synthetic form of antioxidants.
The astaxanthin that is usually sold today for aquaculture is produced synthetically from petrochemical products like for example coal which is toxic.
WILD SALMON VS. FARMED SALMON
Here are some of the main differences between wild and farmed salmon.
Persistent organic pollutants or POPs are chemicals that are very toxic. They can affect our environment and even our health. These chemicals are ingested by the wildlife and they become very harmful for us.
Researches have connected these chemicals with very serious illnesses and diseases, like for example type 2 diabetes and obesity. They can also increase the risk of stroke in women.
A recent study proved that farmed salmon from some regions contained 13 fat soluble organic pollutants which is even 10 times higher than what is being measured in wild salmon.
Wild salmon contains a smaller number of calories and also 50% less fat than farmed salmon does.
Wild salmon is full with 8 times more vitamin D, 3 times more vitamin A and numerous other nutrients.
We all know that some fish are contaminated with mercury. Salmon is contaminated, too, but it’s very low, so it can’t harm your health.
Farmed salmon can accumulate more fat-soluble toxins and is much fatter.
Chemicals which can cause cancer
Farmed salmon can increase the risk of acquiring cancer in 3 times. That’s because the farmed type is more exposed to various pollutants from the environment as well as to numerous chemicals that only increase the risk factors.
Farmed salmon is grown into fishponds that are overcrowded. The nets can be full of bacteria which cause various infections.
Farmers want to stop the development of bacteria because they spread illnesses and diseases which means their work will stop. They start to give massive doses of antibiotics to the fish so that they can make sure they’re healthy.
Wild fish don’t come into contact with chemicals or antibiotics.
Antibiotics can cause resistance of some bacteria.
VARIETY OF WILD SALMON TO TRY
- Pacific coho salmon – It’s a very low-calorie type of salmon full of vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids. It is the ideal type of food for people who are on a diet. It can also be farmed, so make sure you check the label when you buy it!
- Chinook (king) salmon – This type of salmon contains twice as more omega 3 acids than other types of salmon. Check the label whether it’s farmed or wild!
- Sockeye salmon – This type is also called the red salmon. It contains plenty of vitamin D and cholesterol. It feeds on krill and phytoplankton only and it contains plenty of astaxanthin because of that. It gives this type of salmon its red color. It is very hard to farm and is mostly found wild.
