A world-renowned Harvard professor and psychologist, J. Kagan claims that ADHD doesn’t exist, the condition we know as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is an invention, a hoax that’s partly fault of the physicians who make the diagnosis.
Numerous health experts and psychologists criticized his statements but the professor, in his defense, stated that we should change the method of treatment or these type of disorders. His criticism is directed toward the fact that all kids that misbehave at school or show bad grades are immediately diagnosed with ADHD and prescribed Ritalin, a drug that has mind-altering properties, when in fact the physicians should exam the circumstances more thoroughly.
All the kids that show bad results at school, or behaviour problems are sent to the paediatrician. And what does he do? He prescribes Ritalin and case closed. However, 90% of the children who are diagnosed with ADHD don’t have abnormal dopamine metabolism. We could blame the pharmaceutical companies since we know that prescribed drugs are profitable and doctors have benefits from prescribing and promoting certain drugs. This is what often causes over-diagnosis or misdiagnosis in many cases.
Misdiagnosis is a result of improper investigation in to the matter or the lack of one. In 2011 more than 6 million kids were diagnosed with ADHD the CDC reports, can you imagine these numbers?
The professor further goes to say that drugs should be the last resort for physicians and parents alike. He adds that we need to change the way we treat problems like ADHD, depression and anxiety. The health experts should first thoroughly examine all the circumstances and explore other options before giving a diagnosis and prescribing drugs.
