McDonald’s is a master in marketing and know how to get your attention where it wants it. One of their most adored creations is the McRib sandwich, which was first introduced in 1983 but the sandwich‘s great comeback was in 2013.
McDonalds says that their McRib sandwich is made of a bun, a barbecue patty, onions and pickles but it actually contains up to 70 ingredients which can be seen at the official website of the company, they list them one by one, shamelessly.
Below you can find a short review of all the ingredients that make the McRib one of our favorite sandwiches, and then you can tell us if you’re going to buy one ever again.
The “Meat” that goes in the McRib
The pork patty, according to the website is consisted of: Pork, salt, water, preservatives such as BHA, Propyl Gallate and Citric Acid and dextrose as well.
The pork meat is extra low-quality and it’s not real meat at all, it’s restructured from the disposable inner organs such as the tripe, heart and stomach which are cooked in water and salt. This cooking process eliminates all the nutritious ingredients, like proteins, and we get some concoction called the pork patty.
The preservatives they use, like BHA and propyl gallate have a bunch of unwanted side-effects and have been linked to increased risk of thyroid and bladder cancer, as well as cytotoxicity and hyperplasia.
As allergens they list: Soy and wheat
The McRib Bun is consisted of: Enriched Flour (Malted Barley Flour, Bleached Wheat Flour, Niacin, Thiamin Mononitrate, Reduced Iron, Folic Acid, Riboflavin), Water, High Fructose Corn Syrup and Yeast. It has 2% or less: Corn Meal, Salt, Soybean Oil, Wheat Gluten, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean, Sugar, Dextrose, Cultured Wheat Flour, Malted Barley Flour, Ammonium Sulfate, Calcium Sulfate, Soy Flour, Dough Conditioners, Guar Gum, Soy Lecithin, Calcium Propionate.
It also contains: Soy and wheat
The bun alone has more than 40 ingredients all of which have some negative side-effects. Hydrogenated oils have a number of negative effects on your overall health. High fructose syrup can cause pancreatic cancer, while the calcium sulfate and ammonium can be used as soil fertilizers.
The azodicarbonamide, which they use as a dough conditioner, many use it in the foamed plastic industry in the US, while Europe and Australia banned completely. Something that’s banned in the rest of the world, McDonalds adds it to the sandwich buns, how about that?
The sauce is made of: Water, Salt, Tomato Paste, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Distilled Vinegar, Natural Smoke Flavor, Molasses, Modified Food Starch, Sugar, Soybean Oil, Spices, Xanthan Gum, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Beet Powder, Sodium Benzoate, Chili Pepper, Caramel Color.
Once again we have high fructose syrup in the sauce as well.
The pickles are not just pickles, they’re made of: Cucumbers, Distilled Vinegar, Alum, Water, Salt, Potassium Sorbate, Calcium Chloride, Natural Flavors, Polysorbate 80 and Turmeric extracts for color.
Even the pickles in the McRib are carcinogenic, they contain potassium sorbate which has mutagenic and genotoxic properties.
So it turns out that the popular McRib has everything else other than an actual rib in its ingredients list.
The McDonald’s Marketing Director, Marta Fearon, spins the matter in the company’s interest by adding that the fact there’s no ribs in the sandwich gives the item its “eccentric sense of humor”.
But this isn’t fooling anyone, people are becoming aware that fast food consumption has a detrimental effect on our health and realize they should consume healthier, whole foods if they want to preserve their health.
Let’s just hope that the day we have no such fast food items on the table is near and we all live happily, healthily and carefree.
